1933

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) established Ateneo de Cagayan as a small elementary school in Cagayan de Oro City.

1956

The institution was renamed Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan in honor of Saint Francis Xavier, Jesuit patron of missions.
