History & Background
1938
Founded as Lucena Catholic School through the initiative of Bishop of Lipa Alfredo Versoza, D.D., Canadian priest Fr. Ulric Arcand of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and Don Daniel Marquez. The first Maryknoll Sisters arrived the same year and renamed the school Maryknoll Academy, beginning with 250 students.
1941-1945
The school temporarily ceased operations during World War II as its campus was used as a garrison by Japanese forces during the occupation of Lucena. It resumed in 1945 and obtained Government Recognition for Elementary and Secondary courses in 1946.
1968
An extension campus opened in Ilasan, Tayabas, Quezon, providing affordable Catholic education to youth in surrounding barangays. The school later opened a Night High School and Vocational School to serve working students.
1973-1976
The Maryknoll Sisters’ change of mission led to a transition from religious leadership to lay administration under the Diocese of Lucena. In 1976, Maryknoll Academy was renamed Maryhill Academy. The High School department earned PAASCU accreditation in 1975, becoming the first accredited school in Quezon Province.
1996
CHED approved Maryhill’s tertiary-level operations, and the school was renamed Maryhill College, opening with 37 inaugural college students.
2002
The Basic Education program merged the elementary and high school departments under the leadership of Bishop Emilio Z. Marquez, D.D. The institution underwent significant physical expansion including the Pope John Paul II building and Pope Benedict XVI building.
