Centro Escolar University (CEU) is a private non-sectarian university in Manila, founded in 1907 by Librada Avelino and Carmen de Luna. It is one of the oldest private universities in the Philippines and was among the first women-led educational institutions in Asia.

History & Background

1907

Librada Avelino and Sofia de Veyra founded Centro Escolar in Manila as a school for Filipino women, one of the first institutions established by Filipino women educators.

1932

Centro Escolar de Señoritas was elevated to Centro Escolar University, among the first women’s universities in Asia.

1945

CEU rebuilt after World War II, resuming its mission of women’s higher education and pharmacy excellence.

1979

CEU transitioned from an all-women institution to a co-educational university, expanding its student base.

2004

CEU expanded beyond Manila with campuses in Malolos, Bulacan and Makati City.
