About the School
The University of the Philippines Visayas (UP Visayas) is a public state university with its main campus in Miagao, Iloilo. Established in 1946, it is the premier fisheries and marine sciences institution in the Philippines and part of the UP System.
UP Visayas is home to the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, one of the most respected marine science programs in Southeast Asia. Its Miagao campus is located near a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The university also offers programs in management, arts and sciences, and technology. It plays a key role in research on marine biodiversity, aquaculture, and coastal resource management in the Western Visayas region.

History & Background
1918
The University of the Philippines established a trade school in Iloilo, its first presence in the Western Visayas region.
1947
UP’s College of Fisheries was created in Miagao, Iloilo — becoming the foundation of what would become UP Visayas.
1979
The UP Board of Regents formally established UP in the Visayas as an autonomous unit of the UP System.
2002
UP in the Visayas was elevated to full constituent university status within the UP System with its own Chancellor.
2017
Filipino undergraduates at UP Visayas benefited from the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
Today
UP Visayas remains the country’s premier institution for fisheries, marine science, and aquaculture research.
